    PRESS RELEASE December 16, 2008 For Immediate Release Contact: Lisa Bautista 510.967.1109 jfmpresents@gmail.com Denmark's "violin prodigy" Mads Tolling @ Yoshi's Oakland 02.09.09 Oakland, California (December 16, 2008) At the age of 10, Mads Tolling performed at the European Parliament meeting in Copenhagen before a standing-room only crowd, which included the then Danish Prime Minister Poul Schlüter as well as the American ambassador to Denmark.  Between the ages of 10-14, Mads entered various competitions in Copenhagen, won first prizes in both classical music and jazz categories and became known as a "violin prodigy."  Now, at 28 years young, Mads' segue from band member with Turtle Island Quartet and Stanley Clarke to bandleader of the Mads Tolling Quartet is the next opportunity on his amazing journey.  Join the Mads Tolling Quartet for one highly anticipated 8PM show at Yoshi's Oakland, Monday, February 9, 2009.    "Mads has the amazing talent and skills that few young musicians can match.  His music is both beautiful and refreshing, exhibiting his superb mastery of the modern American Jazz music that is rarely seen among his peers." ~Jean-Luc Ponty For many, life can be a series of opportunities that offer crossroad choices.  So far, Denmark's "violin prodigy" Mads Tolling has been blessed with not only fabulous opportunities, but also wise choices.  First, he was accepted as one of two violinists to join the Copenhagen Rhythmic Conservatory.  Only 45 of 350 applicants are selected each year.  But just prior to accepting, Mads auditioned at the "Berklee World Scholarship Tour" in Paris, was selected, and enrolled in the fall of 2000.  In the spring of 2003, Mads graduated Summa Cum Laude from Berklee College of Music, and this set the stage for a series of opportunities to manifest. Famed violinist Jean-Luc Ponty recommended Mads to Grammy- and Emmy-winning bassist and film composer, Stanley Clarke.  At the time, Stanley was forming a new band, looking for a violinist, but had not found the perfect fit, that is, until he listened to Mads' demo CD.  Mads auditioned in Los Angeles and was invited to join the Stanley Clarke five-piece band.  But just prior to the first tour with Stanley in April 2003, Mads also auditioned for the Thelonious Monk Institute.  Mads auditioned before a panel of jazz experts, which included Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, and Terrence Blanchard.  He was selected as the only violinist ever to join the institute, and of the 200 applicants, only six were selected that year. They say everything happens in threes, and the third opportunity presented itself when twice Grammy-nominated composer and Turtle Island String Quartet founder David Balakrishnan called.  David was auditioning for a new violist for two concerts in July 2003.  Mads accepted the offer, despite the fact that he had never played the viola.  Over the next ten days, Mads learned both the new instrument and music just in time for first rehearsal.  Both concerts were successful, and Mads was offered a permanent position as the new violist.  As a result of joining this quartet, Mads declined the full scholarship Master of Music program from the Thelonious Monk Institute. Mads Tolling regularly tours with both Stanley Clarke and Turtle Island Quartet.  In 2006, as part of Turtle Island Quartet, Mads won his first Grammy for Best Classical Crossover album "4+Four."  Mads is on Stanley Clarke's 2007 release "The Toys of Men."  And in 2008, Mads won his second Turtle Island Quartet Grammy for "A Love Supreme - The Legacy of John Coltrane."  He has received Denmark's Sankt Annae's Award for Musical Excellence as well as grants from Queen Margaret, the Sonning Foundation, and the Berklee Elvin Jones Award.  He has performed with Paquito d'Rivera, Al Di Meola, Lenny White, Kenny Barron, Joe Lovano, Stefon Harris, The Assad Brothers and Leo Kottke.  Mads has performed in Canada, Mexico, Barbados, South Africa, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Slovenia, Bulgaria, Norway, Holland, England, Northern Ireland, Italy, Portugal, Russia, Ukraine, and Australia at venues such as The Library of Congress, The Strathmore Mansion, The Hollywood Bowl, Concord Pavilion, Merkin Hall, Herbst Theatre, North Sea Jazz Festival, San Miguel Classical Festival, Prinzregent Theatre, Copenhagen Jazz Festival, and Ronnie Scotts.     Movie buffs will once again have the opportunity to experience some of Hollywood's greatest films at the Paramount Theatre in Oakland. The Theatre announced its popular Movie Classics Series, which kicks off on October 17 at 8 p.m., featuring Cool Hand Luke, one of America's most inspiring movies, starring Paul Newman. Admission is only $5 and tickets can be purchased at the Paramount Theatre Box Office, ticketmaster.com or by calling (415) 421 TIXS (8497) or (510) 625 TIXS (8497). All seats are general admission. The Paramount Box Office (2025 Broadway, Oakland) opens at 6 p.m. on the day of the shows.

    About Cool Hand Luke
    Cool Hand Luke is a 1967 American drama film starring Paul Newman and directed by Stuart Rosenberg. The screenplay was adapted by Donn Pearce and Frank Pierson from the novel by Pearce. The film features George Kennedy, Strother Martin, J.D. Cannon, and Morgan Woodward. Newman stars in the title role as Luke, a prisoner in a Florida prison camp who refuses to submit to the system. In 2005, the United States Library of Congress deemed Cool Hand Luke to be "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" and selected it for preservation in the National Film Registry. The movie also won an Academy Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role and was nominated for Best Actor in a Leading Role.
    
    About Phantom of the Opera
    The Phantom of the Opera is a 1925 silent film directed by Rupert Julian adaptation of the Gaston Leroux novel of the same title. The film featured Lon Chaney in the title role as the masked and facially deformed Phantom who haunts the Paris Opera House, causing murder and mayhem in an attempt to force the management to make the woman he loves a star. It is most famous for Lon Chaney's intentionally horrific, self-applied make-up, which was kept a studio secret until the film's premiere. The film has been deemed "culturally significant" by the Library of Congress and selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry.
    
    About North by Northwest
    North by Northwest (1959) is a suspense film directed by Alfred Hitchcock, starring Cary Grant, Eva Marie Saint and James Mason, and featuring Leo G. Carroll and Martin Landau. The film is one of several Hitchcock movies with a film score by Bernard Herrmann and features a famous title sequence by the graphic designer Saul Bass.
    The movie's world premiere took place in the San Sebastian International Film Festival. North by Northwest is a tale of mistaken identity, with an innocent man pursued across America by agents of a mysterious organization who want to stop his interference in their plans to smuggle out some microfilm. The movie was nominated for three Academy Awards.
    
    About Singin' in the Rain
    Singin' in the Rain is a 1952 comedy musical film starring Gene Kelly, Donald O'Connor, and Debbie Reynolds and directed by Kelly and Stanley Donen, with Kelly also providing the choreography. It offers a comic depiction of Hollywood's transition from silent films to "talkies.” The movie is frequently described as one of the best musicals ever made and was nominated for two Academy Awards.

    About Paramount Theatre in Oakland
    Oakland's Paramount Theatre is one of the finest remaining examples of Art Deco design in the United States. It was designed by renowned San Francisco architect Timothy L. Pflueger and completed in late 1931. After its initial brief blaze of "movie palace" glory in the 1930's, this remarkable auditorium suffered three decades of neglect and decline until its rescue by the Oakland Symphony, the City of Oakland and numerous private donors.
